Summary

Founded in 1999, Esurance was one of the first insurance companies to sell insurance online. Esurance's goal was to create a site where consumers could buy auto insurance online. Thereby, allowing consumers to buy insurance without having to speak to an agent and buy more quickly. Moreover, it provided online access to one's policy, something we take for granted today. Esurance tends to offer competitively priced auto insurance and will often cover individuals that other carriers won't.

Key Benefits

  • Competitive pricing
  • Less restrictive policies
  • Will often cover uninsured, young drivers or drivers with a less than perfect driving record.
  • Online focused and good online customer experience.

Ratings Summary

Ratings Highlights

Overall Rating
Our insurance agent survey respondents thought Esurance ranked highly on providing consumers with a low-priced product. They rated Esurance lower on managing claims. For consumers that may have some challenges with other insurance companies, e.g., young drivers, uninsured drivers and drivers with tickets or accidents, Esurance is a very good option.
Pricing
Our auto Insurance agent respondents thought Esurance was a price leader, particularly when it came to consumers that other insurance companies regard as risky, e.g., young drivers or drivers with accidents or tickets.
Handling Claims
Our auto Insurance agent respondents thought that Esurance wasn't strong in managing and servicing claims. Other insurance companies may be a better match if you are focused on quick and easy resolution of a claim.
Uninsured Drivers
Our auto Insurance agent respondents thought Esurance was near the top when it came to uninsured drivers. Esurance provides uninsured drivers with competitively priced options when many other insurance companies won't provide a quote or at least a competitive quote.

Drivers with Tickets/Accidents
If you have a challenged driving record, Esurance may be a great company to work with. Our auto insurance agent survey respondents ranked Esurance near the top for providing a good offering for consumers regarded as driving risks by other insurance companies.
Premium Driver
If you are a driver with a clean record and strong credit, Esurance may be a good option if you are focused on price. If you are focused on service or breadth of insurance offerings other insurance companies may be a better fit.

The Car Insurance Guide's Reviews Methodology

The Car Insurance Guide uses a proprietary algorithm to evaluate the car insurance options presented. Factors reviewed and rated include pricing, handling of claims, age of driver, bundling, and driver type. These factors are evaluated and scored to provide an overall score for the carrier as well as being individually assessed to provide a detailed review of the fit of the carrier to the driver. The data comes from research The Car Insurance Guide conducts as an invite-only annual survey and from interviews with car insurance agents. Insights from experts, those whose job it is to understand and recommend the best insurance companies for their clients, is invaluable. Use of The Car Insurance Guide's 2021 reviews by third parties without the express written consent of The Car Insurance Guide is strictly prohibited.
